Road and Sidewalk Projects Completed – Your SPLOST Pennies At Work<br /> <br /> Two important projects were recently completed in Duluth; Davenport Road and West Lawrenceville Street. These photos show the finished product featuring new sidewalks and repaved streets.<br /> <br /> Construction was completed in July - more than three months ahead of schedule - on the one-half mile section along Davenport Road from Buford Highway to the City Limits at Bromley Rowe. This project added new sidewalks, curb, gutter, drainage and repaying of Davenport Road.<br /> <br /> Along historic West Lawrenceville Street, a streetscape improvement project was also completed in July. The roadway was repaved; sidewalks added to both sides of the street; and new light fixtures were installed from Hill Street down to the area near Joan Glancy Hospital.<br /> <br /> Thank you for your patience during our construction of these projects. We recognize the disruption and traffic delays caused by construction zones, but we think the final result - with increased safety and accessibility - is well worth the temporary inconvenience. Be sure to watch for more road and sidewalk projects starting very soon in Duluth!<br /> <br /> Bunten Road Park Summer Day Camp<br /> <br /> For the second consecutive year, Rotary Club of Duluth and the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department have made it possible for Rainbow Village children to attend summer day camp at Bunten Road Park in Duluth.<br /> <br /> Duluth Rotary sponsored two separate fund-raising events earlier this year -- a winter poker/bingo party at Gwinnett Place Marriott and a spring golf tournament at Chateau Élan -- so that all Rainbow Village children of eligible age could attend summer day camp. Duluth-based Rainbow Village supports families in dire need with temporary housing, job training, parenting classes, and other programs that lead to self-sufficiency.<br /> <br /> Duluth Rotary presented nearly $16,000 to Rainbow Village that enabled 27 youngsters, ages four to 15, to take part as campers, counselors-in-training or counselor technicians. The funds allow the youngsters to attend all 10 weeks of summer camp sponsored by the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department. Camp began May 31 and continued through Aug. 5. Each week of camp had a different fun theme.<br /> <br /> According to Kathy Marelle, Director of the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation, a wide range of age-appropriate activities: tennis, swimming, dance, and specialty camps, like basketball and soccer, are offered to foster enjoyment and growth. “It’s wonderful to see that our day camp attracts youngsters from throughout our community,” Marelle said. The camp is also a great experience for Counselors-in- Training and Counselor Technicians, she said. “They learn about job responsibility while gaining important social skills.”<br /> <br /> For more information about the Bunten Road Park Summer Day Camp, visit www.duluthga.net.
